What is coaching?
Coaching entails working with a person, known as the client or the
coachee, in a manner that allows the client to excel by developing
his/her own latent competencies to their full potential. This is
conducted one-on-one in a dynamic process to provide an opportunity
to gain clarity, remove self-imposed limitations, so that the coachee
can fully tap into their strengths.
A coach facilitates the process, allowing the coachee to set goals
and take action. Coaching assists in ascertaining where the coachee
is, where they want to go, and how to get there. It stirs them to
accomplish more and to contribute more.
Is it teaching?
No. The coach taps into, draws out, and develops the client’s
own latent capabilities.
Like mentoring?
Coaching and mentoring have much in common, but there is a distinction:
• Coaching - goal oriented and relatively short term
• Mentoring takes place over a longer term and implies a mentor
passing on specific knowledge.
Does this mean coaching is like psychotherapy?
No. Psychotherapy addresses past issues and deals with the emotional
content of those issues.
What is the difference between business coaching and life
coaching?
The skills and attributes of a skilled coach apply to both. The
difference is a matter of preference, rather than skill.
Business coaching directs attention towards obtaining business outcomes.
Life coaching on the other hand focuses on the client’s personal
life and may include coaching personal finances, career, relationships,
etc.
The two may well overlap.
